Vote Giesta For Mayor

Friends, My campaign was built that on the premise that all residents should have a voice on issues that matter to them. Politicians often say this but I’ve made it the norm to be accessible to everyone during my campaign. My phone number was listed and advertised, allowing me to talk with –literally—thousands of residents. If elected, it will remain listed because I truly believe there are many sound ideas in this city, but they are often muted because leaders are immune to their constituents. I am proud that my grassroots campaign was built by a couple of people and has grown to thousands. Residents and business owners are getting crushed with taxes –and with little to show for it. We were named the most violent city in Massachusetts; our firefighters are working out of firehouses that are literally falling apart; teachers have been forced to reapply for their jobs (a level of disrespect never before seen); potholes and nuisance properties are overtaking our neighborhoods; and opioids are now an epidemic. My plan is addresses these issues. First, I will fight to get more of our federal dollars back to New Bedford. Currently, we received only $128 million over three years. This is embarrassing low. My administration will target $251 million over three years. I will apply for four Department of Justice Grants to assist our police department with retaking our streets from the thugs who want to do us harm. My plan also includes working with Chief Comes on a budget that not only immediately addresses the safety concerns of our firehouses, but also provides the necessary resources to stop the rolling blackouts, which not only puts our firefighters in danger, but all residents. My plan also includes the Department of City Services. Like Boston, residents will have one number to call –all non-emergency calls will be responded to within 48 hours. Whether it’s a pothole, graffiti, over grown grass or litter, the city will respond. And of course, if they do not respond, residents will have my home number –I will hold my administration accountable, as I would expect you to hold me accountable. I’m asking for your vote on Tuesday because I know many of you agree with me. I may not be politically correct, nor do I have a massive campaign war chest, but your voice matters and no amount of money can take away your right to vote. I hope you will give me a chance to prove myself and I hope, regardless of who you choose, you vote on Tuesday. Maria Giesta 774-328-9667
—Maria Giesta, Candidate for Mayor of New Bedford, Massachusetts
